To start with, there are totally six possible way for international student to get into German university

  • Language course in Home country (up to B1/ B2) and Studienkolleg in Germany.

Language course in Home country and STK in Germany:

First possible way for international student to get into German University is to  take up a language course in his/ her home country up to B1/ B2 (depending upon the STK) and then apply for STK directly. After receiving an offer letter from STK he/ she can come to Germany to write the Aufnahmeprüfung. After completing the course students should clear Festellungsprüfung (FSP) to enter into the University.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  1. The student is in a comfort zone while doing language course
  2. The language course is cost efficient when you are in your home country.
  3. You don’t have to spend money on accommodation.

CHALLENGES:

  1. The quality of education cannot match the German standards.
  2. The Difficulty rate in clearing Aufnahmeprüfung is high because one needs proper training in maths and German, and that cannot be attained in the Home country.
  3. Getting adapted to the surroundings and culture is going to be arduous and time consuming.
  4. Visa will be a problem, as the student is only a candidate of a particular STK. The student have to clear the exam or else the student will be sent back to India, resulting in wastage of money.
  5. Accommodation at different places near STKs should be taken care of.

Language course and STK in Germany:

Second possible way for international student to get into German university is to do a language course in Germany and obtain the required level in the language. Then he/ she should apply to STK, clears its exam and then get an admission from the respective Studienkolleg. Later the student has to pass FSP. Subsequently he/ she is entitled to enter the University.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  1. The language is well learnt with the help of native speakers.
  2. There will absolutely be no problem with visa because you enter into Germany as a student already.
  3. The culture and lifestyle can be easily adapted.
  4. Accommodations for the initial days will be organised by the language school.
  5. Required training for Aufnahmeprüfung can be acquired.

CHALLENGES:

  1. The course is going to be a bit expensive.
  2. The living expenses should be handled.

Completing 1 year of college:

For a student who has already done one year of college in his/ her Home country and  intends to do the course in Germany, this possible way for international student to get into   German university is going to be the most ideal one. The student doesn’t need to attend the STK as he/ she has 13 years of education. Altogether, the student just need to do the language up to TEST-DAF level and then enter the University. The student can do one of the two following ways, that is:

  • Doing the language course in Home country.
  • Doing the language course in Germany.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The TEST-DAF can be cleared easily if the language is done in Germany.
  • Amount spent on accommodation will be cut by half.

CHALLENGES:

  1. The first year of college life in Germany would be hectic. This is because the student is not attending Studienkolleg which ultimately indicates that no training is given in the core subjects (in German). Since the fundamentals are studied in English earlier, it would take a lot of time to get used to this practice.
  2. If the pedagogy for language course is done in home country, it might take years to clear the TEST-DAF exam.

Foundation program in English:

There is another possible way for international student to get into German University ie; do the foundation program in English. This method is more likely for students who find German difficult to adapt.

  2. The obligation for language is less.
  3. The amount spent on language course can be saved, since only basic German will be needed.

CHALLENGES:

  1. There is no guaranteed future as this possibilty of getting into german university is high risk.

  3. Students may stumble to mingle with the public
  4. The course is expensive.
  5. Only limited amount of course is available. since it is very competitive, the student should secure high percentage, in order to get into University.

Clearing JEE Advance exam:

This possibilty of getting into german university for international students  is exclusive for Indian students who clear the JEE Advance exam. The University asmits the students who have cleared JEE Advanced. In Germany JEE Advanced is equivalent to FSP (Feststellungsprüfung). The students just have to do up to TEST DAF level in German language. There is no need for STKs.

THE HIGHLIGHTS AND CHALLENGES OF THIS ASPECT IS JUST SIMILAR TO “completing 1st year of college in home country”.

Foundation programs [in German]:

FH Aachen Freshman Year or Wildau Foundation Year provides foundation course along with language for a duration of one year. At the end of which one has to clear the Exam to enrol into the University.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  1. Time is saved (almost one year)
  2. The living expense will also be reduced as one year’s outlay is not spent.

CHALLENGES:

  1. The course fees are inflated.
  2. The lesser the time, the more is the pressure. Students have to focus and put lot of effort during this one year. This possible way for international student to get into German University is regarded as high risk.
